Beyond the prompt: Where to use AI in hospitality marketing… and where to draw the line

A couple of weeks ago, I published a piece on LinkedIn entitled, Death to the travel cliché, sharing practical tips on how to train AI to capture your hospitality brand's voice and stop churning out generic, soulless copy.

The response was phenomenal, and it caused quite a stir. My inbox and the comment section were flooded with insights from brilliant minds across the hospitality sector. One unifying consensus emerged: AI has its place as a tool for efficiency, but it is completely hollow without human experience at its core.

I couldn’t agree more. It is a belief we hold deeply at Peregryn.

When it comes to AI in the hospitality industry, Large Language Models work well as an assistant for clearing administrative hurdles or overcoming the blank page. But the heavy lifting of strategic thinking and emotive copywriting still belongs entirely to humans.

This sentiment is especially true in the world of travel - which is entirely driven by emotion, narrative and human trust.

So in a busy marketing team, how do you strike that balance between human insight and AI efficiency? We’ve set out our recommendations for when real-life experience comes into play and how to use AI without losing your brand's humanity.

Why travel demands a human heartbeat

Travel is inherently sensory, physical, and deeply emotional.

An AI model can scrape a million online reviews to tell you that the Amalfi Coast is ‘breathtaking or that a boutique hotel in Mayfair is ‘elegant’. We already know that.

What AI cannot do is feel. It has never tasted the salt in the morning Mediterranean air, or experienced that quiet relief of stepping into a perfectly cooled lobby after a frantic day of travel.

Hospitality is the business of human care. To build a luxury brand that commands premium rates, you need to evoke the exact physical and emotional response a guest feels when they are on property. You are selling anticipation, trust, atmosphere.

If you leave defining your strategy, writing your narrative, and designing your guest touchpoints to an entity that has no capacity to feel, the result will always lack resonance.

It might be technically flawless and grammatically correct, but it won't give a guest goosebumps. And goosebumps are what inspire, they set you apart and drive direct bookings over generic OTA listings.

That is why we argue that human leadership remains non-negotiable across three core areas of your marketing engine:

1. Brand strategy and market positioning

AI is fantastic at organising data. But it’s not a strategist. So it’s a commercial risk to rely on AI as the ‘brains’ of your brand.

Think of it as a prediction engine built on the past. It aggregates what already exists. But it can’t generate original thought or challenge the status quo. If you use AI to define your hotel brand, what you’ll get back is an average taken from every competitor in your market. It will be bland and generic, rather than dynamic and different.

The human advantage: Crafting a powerful hotel branding strategy requires constructive friction. A human partner pushes back, asks uncomfortable questions about your commercial targets, and unearths the unique story you are often too close to your own business to see.

AI is engineered to agree with your prompts. It won’t tell you if your core concept lacks market demand. To build a brand that commands premium rates rather than competing on price, you need humans to define your brand architecture, target demographic, and market differentiation.

The AI asset: Use AI to compile data and help execute your vision. For example, harness it to format raw strategy notes, condense competitor research or to pull key themes from industry reports.

You can also let it do the grunt work, such as asking it to generate 10 email subject lines that align with the specific guidelines you have already established. The strategy is there, now you are simply asking AI to adhere to a positioning framework your team has already defined.

The commercial impact: As I noted above, AI creates market consensus, but it is human strategy that creates market distinction. Without human leadership at the start, your brand drifts into generic territory, forcing you to rely on online travel agencies (OTAs) and special offers to fill rooms.

2. Crafting content that connects

Effective copywriting for hotels and travel brands is not about just filling space with descriptive words. It is about persuasion and pacing, risk reduction and emotional leverage.

As a journalist and editor, I value how expert copywriters understand the subtle psychological hurdles of booking a luxury stay. They know exactly which words reassure an anxious traveller and which narratives make a high price tag feel completely justified.

The human advantage: A human copywriter can evoke a feeling without saying it outright, whereas if you ask an AI to communicate a premium experience, its default is to drop the word ‘luxury’ into every sentence or rely on overused clichés, such as ‘breathtaking, ‘elegant’, ‘oasis’ and ‘sanctuary’ (hence my previous post).

So when it comes to your primary conversion assets - your homepage hero, your primary room descriptions, campaign landing pages etc - keep AI away and ensure you have a human element involved.

The AI asset: Use AI to generate initial outlines, draft routine transactional emails, or reformat long-form journal articles into short social posts. Whenever you use AI, make sure you add a human element.

Always give the content a ‘sensory audit’ before you post. A human should review the text and inject at least two sensory details that an AI could never know, something specific to you. The scent of woodsmoke in your cosy lobby, perhaps, or the crisp texture of the linen in each room. These details build credibility and drive direct bookings.

The commercial impact: Emotion drives direct bookings. Cliché-ridden AI copy dilutes your brand authority and damages conversion rates on your highest-margin channel - your own website.

3. Engineering the Brand Experience

Hospitality is the business of human care, both online and on-property. An algorithm can’t design the intuitive, unscripted moments that turn a first-time guest into a lifelong brand ambassador. An algorithm cannot bring to life a brand strategy and turn it into a physical guest journey.

The human advantage: Brand experience is where a strategy comes alive in the real world. This is precisely where a specialist hospitality branding agency can add value. We bridge the gap between your digital promise and your physical reality.

We take abstract brand strategy and translate it into tangible assets, defining your property’s sensory profile and designing physical touchpoints, such as signposting and guest room collateral. We can also create staff tone-of-voice guidelines to manage concierge interactions.

I can't understand environmental psychology or guest journey friction. You need humans to curate how a brand feels when a guest steps out of a taxi and into your lobby.

The AI asset: Use AI to handle the logistical heavy lifting. It can generate standard operating procedures (SOPs) or format staff schedules. One great way to use AI is to harness guest feedback data - feed in 500 guest review comments and let AI analyse them to extract key operational sentiment or spot recurring pain points.

That way you free up your human team to focus on physical hospitality and creating guest connections.

The commercial impact: A disconnect between what your marketing promises and what your property delivers can cause brand drift and negative reviews. Human alignment ensures every physical touchpoint reinforces your premium positioning.

Building a hybrid future

The recent conversation surrounding my post highlighted a key point: the hospitality sector isn’t anti-AI, but we still need human insight.

When used correctly, AI gives lean marketing departments the bandwidth to punch well above their weight. But as AI-generated content floods the web, authentic human perspective, editorial precision, and distinct brand strategy become the ultimate competitive differentiator.

The future of luxury travel marketing isn't about choosing between human talent or artificial intelligence. By harnessing AI and putting it in the service of human strategy, we can ensure operations stay efficient and your margins stay protected, all while your brand’s unique story remains deeply human.
